ROI program research published as featured article in the Journal of Extension This month, the Journal of Extension published some of the research of Dr. Paul Hill and Dr. Amanda Ali. Before the pandemic, the ROI program developed a remote work leadership course to equip business leaders with knowledge and skills to create remote jobs as a solution to rural unemployment. Compared to urban counties, Utah's rural counties experience higher levels of unemployment. This descriptive evaluation study collected data from course participants (N = 62). Findings showed short-term outcomes were achieved; participants experienced increases in knowledge and skills, and had more positive intentions toward creating remote jobs and hiring employees from rural counties. Since this initial study, we have pursued continuous evaluation of this specialized training course which has led to $1.2M in federal funding and over 440 new remote jobs created in targeted counties of Utah.

Participate in scientific study on remote workWe invite you to participate in a scientific study on remote work. This study is being conducted in collaboration with researchers here at Utah State University, the University of Utah, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Connecticut. The purpose of this study is to understand the challenges faced by remote workers and how remote workers navigate the boundaries between work and home.
Your participation is needed in the form of filling out surveys about your experiences while working remotely. The initial survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. You will also be asked to complete a second and third survey several weeks later which take approximately 15 minutes each to complete.
You will receive a $10 gift card upon completion of the three surveys and be entered in a drawing to receive a $75 gift card.

USU Extension 4-H sparks STEM education among rural youthIn 2016, 4-H implemented a small computer science program for students in Kanab Elementary School with funding provided by a grant from the Utah STEM Action Center. The program now has 250 students in grades 2 through 8 participating in coding education each year. This program has sparked increased interest in computer science, and 4-H has addressed this interest by expanding computer science and STEM programs to be more readily available for pre-K through grade 12 students.
